Getting your ADA ramp slope right is one of the first calculations that will shape your commercial access project. In most cases, the 1:12 rule sets the baseline for wheelchair ramp slope on any accessible route, and it directly determines how much ramp length, landing space and handrail coverage your project will need.

What the ADA 1:12 Rule Means
The ADA ramp slope requirement comes from Section 405 of the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design, which sets a maximum running slope of 1:12 for any ramp on an accessible route. In practice, that means for every 1 inch of vertical rise, you need at least 12 inches of ramp length. According to the U.S. Access Board’s guidance on ramps and curb ramps, this works out to a maximum slope of roughly 8.33%, and the running slope must stay uniform along the full length of each ramp run.
This single ratio drives most of your practical decisions around slope calculations. A steeper ramp might look like it saves space, but it could fall outside ADA ramp requirements and create a real safety issue for wheelchair and scooter users, particularly on longer runs.
While the 1:12 rule can often be accepted as rule of thumb, it is important to note that there are two important exceptions to the rule:
- In the state of Minnesota, a maximum 1:20 slope is required.
- Many Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) projects also require a 1:20 slope.

How to Calculate Ramp Length
How to calculate ADA ramp slope comes down to one formula: take the height you need to overcome (the rise) and multiply it by 12 to get your minimum ramp length in the same unit. A 24-inch rise needs at least 24 feet of ramp. A 30-inch rise, the maximum allowed for a single run, needs at least 30 feet.

That 30-inch threshold is the maximum rise the ADA allows for a single ramp run before a landing becomes mandatory. For buildings with a greater overall height change, such as schools, offices and public facilities working around raised entrances or split-level layouts, this usually means the project needs multiple ramp runs connected by landings rather than one continuous slope.

Important note: Your ramp calculation should be based on the total elevation chance from the point where the ramp begins to the door threshold being accessed. In the past, we’ve been asked to help customers who have taken measurements running from the doorway to the ground directly below it without accounting for the site’s existing grade, resulting in an incorrect ramp length.
When Landings Are Required
Landings aren’t optional extras: under ADA Standards, every ramp run needs a level landing at the top and bottom, and an additional resting platform wherever the ramp changes direction. Each resting or intermediate platform must be at least 60 inches long, and at least as wide as the widest ramp run leading into it. Where a ramp changes direction at a landing, that landing must be a minimum of 60 inches by 60 inches clear.
Commercial ADA ramp projects also need handrails on any run with a rise greater than 6 inches, with a minimum clear width of 36 inches between handrails where they are installed. Skipping or undersizing a platform is one of the fastest ways a design fails inspection, since it disrupts the uniform slope the standard requires and can create a compound slope that doesn’t meet your route requirements.
Common ADA Ramp Design Mistakes
Even straightforward commercial projects run into the same handful of slope-related errors. The most common include:
- Calculating ramp length from the wrong rise figure, often by measuring to the wrong reference point at the top or bottom of the run
- Treating the 1:12 ratio as a target rather than a maximum, which leaves no margin for construction tolerances
- Omitting a landing where a ramp changes direction, not just at the top and bottom of a straight run
- Undersizing handrail coverage on runs with a rise greater than 6 inches
- Assuming a single ramp run can cover a rise greater than 30 inches without a landing

Commercial ADA Compliance Considerations

For schools, offices, government buildings and other public facilities, commercial ADA ramp projects also have to account for site-specific conditions that the 1:12 rule alone doesn’t cover, including drainage, cross slope and surface materials. Cross slope, the gradient running perpendicular to the direction of travel, has its own separate limit under the ADA Standards and cannot exceed 1:48, regardless of how the running slope is calculated.
